Where Did Phish’s Thickness Go?

Here is a clip from Black Eyed Katy on the evening of December 30th, 1997 in Madison Square Garden.  The first 2:30 seconds of this are ridiculously thick, Trey’s funky sound that seemed to have gotten lost after 1998 is at full crispness here.  I would love if they could bring back this sound to Tubes, Ghosts, Moma Dances (or if they just would play Black Eyed Katy again) and other songs of the sort.  At the 2:45 mark the band stops for a huge “Funky Trey Break Down” that dominated the 1997 and 1998 jams.  Cross your fingers for 2010!

Notes: AC/DC Bag included Psycho Killer and Third Stone From the Sun teases. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) made its Phish debut and was sung by Tom Marshall as part of the “Pentagram Harpua,” which also included a narrative about Lost in Space. Pete Carini made an appearance on-stage during the encore. Frankenstein included a segment with Fishman coming center stage with his vacuum. The encore was unusually long; once the band realized they were going to be fined for playing past midnight, they decided to play well past midnight. Sneakin’ Sally was played for the first time since May 28, 1989 (920 shows).
