Mike joined the Rhythm Devils for the last six songs of their tour closer Saturday night at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT. Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, who celebrated his 67th birthday at the show, introduced Mike as a “youngster,” and brought the (45-year-old) bassist out for Devils original “The Center.” The ensemble, which also includes Hart’s skin-pounding partner Billy Kreutzmann, next took a trip through the Dead catalogue in reverse, jamming “Fire on the Mountain” into “Scarlet Begonias.” The set closed with “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad” > “And We Bid You Goodnight.” Cactus stayed on for the encore, the original “See You Again.”
The entire set is available for stream or download at archive.org, and it’s well worth the listen. Mike’s playing remained reserved though solid throughout. He complemented the tasty guitar-playing on Fire > Scarlet nicely, and shimmied up the fretboard to great effect on GDTRFB. But he was given few opportunities to shine quite like he did in the blazing version of “In the Kitchen” he played with Umphrey’s at Higher Ground last November, which we posted on OPT last week (audio of which is available for download here, and is well worth the $1.29.)
This is only the latest chapter in Gordo’s history with the Devils: he played some of their earliest shows with them in 2006, as part of a lineup that also included guitarist Steve Kimock. A 2-DVD set compiled from one of those shows was released as Rhythm Devils Concert Experience.
Before that, Mike and Trey played a one-off gig with Kreutzmann under the name SerialPod at the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam on December 17, 2005. Audio of that show, which includes renditions of “Chalkdust” and “Waves,” can be found on etree, and the soundcheck is available here.
