For the first time ever, Phish will offer a pay-per-view stream of live audio and video from Madison Square Garden on December 30 & 31 and January 1. From livephish.com:
Watch the shows live on LivePhish.com for $14.99 on 12/30 and 1/1, and $19.99 on New Year’s Eve. Pre-order a three night pass for $39.99 and Save 20%.
This move will likely be seen as a new front in the band’s attempt to control (and monetize) the reproduction of their live shows, coming in the face of a recent uptick in fan streams. It remains to be seen whether the band will crack down on the audience streams now that they represent competition; likewise, it is hard to predict how many fans will pay for a stream that–while it does include video–costs more than an MP3 download, despite its being a single-view event.
While this is the band’s first pay-per-view webcast, they have experimented with numerous simulcasts in the past: 10/31/98 and 9/30/00 were webcast for no charge, and 6/17/04 and Coventry were simulcast in movie theatres, with charge.
