Monday Morning Video Pick-Me-Up: Europe

It is with distinct pleasure that I open this week’s pick-me-up with a video that is new to Youtube, and that comes from what I consider one of the greatest sets of all time: 6/25/97 II from Lille, FranceĀ (download audio of the show). Though the first half of the set features some phenomenal jamming, an excellent sandwich, the debut of Meatstick, and a reggae McGrupp, this video picks up at the tail end of the set’s weirdness: with a very unique Makisupa. It’s great to see this footage: it proves that the Cecilia is, strictly speaking, not actually a cappella, as the setlist suggests.

It turns out that a separate video, which overlaps with this one and extends to Rocko William, also exists. I consider Rocko a contender for the title of Worst Song Ever Written, but it’s kind of fun to see nonetheless:

Switch the 6 and 7 in 6/25/97, head from France to Germany, and you’re at our next video, from an opening set for Santana in Hamburg. The only video currently available is PYITE/Sample:

The following summer, the band played a single-set show at the WDR Festival. The festie took place in the city of Koblenz, which has a park called Nassau, so you know the vibez are strong there. Among the highlights of the pro-shot set is the Taste:

Finally, one more German video – also pro-shot, also from ’97, but this time from 2/16.
