We here at OPT try to keep on top of all the many rumors floating around the Phish pond, expertly picking out the most promising-looking Toro and Ikura from the bunch and slicing it into delicious bits of rumor-sushi for you to munch on. And if I may torture the analogy even more, there is always a risk of mind poisoning when consuming raw Phish rumors, so please read further only at your own discretion.
Having said that….it’s looking pretty damn good that Providence natives The What? Cheer Brigade will be bringing their unique brand of marching band brass stylings to Watkins this weekend–perhaps the “WHAT?!” that surfaced in the last half of the first leg was the band simply foreshadowing what was to come in the following month.
The rumor is believed first to have been leaked on a Phish.net message board in May and has been “confirmed” by numerous “inside sources” on other message boards, most notably Phantasy Tour. What raises it all above the substance-less chatter, however, are the “dates” listed on the band’s website.
- Friday, July 1, 2011: Unidas, ME The Sturgeon County Fair
- Saturday, July 2, 2011: Unidas, ME The Sturgeon County Fair (Day Two)
- Sunday, July 3, 2011: Ettington, VT The North American High Five Championships
A quick google search reveals that not only do the events not exist (which is a shame because I was preparing to make a run at next years High Five trophy), the cities themselves appear to be completely made up. A cryptic message from the band at the bottom of the page all-but confirms it:
Friday-Sunday, July 1-3
– Something big is brewing this weekend, but we’re trying to figure out the best way to tell you. Don’t worry dears; we’re not pregnant, and if we were, would that be so terrible?
Rumors revolve around a secret marching band set and a not-secret full set with the Cheer Brigade. If you haven’t yet, go listen to the Giant Country Horns assisted Bowie on your Live Bait 5 compilation for a taste of what may be coming. Let’s get horny!!!
