As you probably know, the great Levon Helm, drummer and vocalist for The Band, passed away last week. Mike Gordon had some parting words for Levon, and Eli memorialized him here on OPT. The first half of today’s Monday morning videos will be devoted to Band covers.
Sadly, Phish has largely left Band covers out of their setlists. But we have a few selections to work with. First off, Trey’s cover of It Makes No Difference from ACL Fest 2004. This is a hard song to play well, and Trey’s performances of it have been inconsistent, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find a version as soulful or as clean as this one.
Next up, Mike’s cover of Don’t Do It, a song Levon sang with The Band. Unfortunately, Mike’s not on vocals for this one, from December of last year, but it still sounds pretty darn good.
And finally, one by Dylan and The Band.
Before you get your week started, check out these three clips, which are old videos, but are new to Youtube. All pretty great.
