Monday Morning Video Pick-Me-Up

As you all know, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch passed away on Friday. It only seemed fitting to start off the week with a Phishy tribute to him. You’re probably all aware that Phish surprised the Dick’s crowd by dusting off Sabotage last September; what some of you may not realize is just how much of a shock it was to hear them take on the song the first time around, in August ’98. Though that show, at Merriweather Post Pavilion, was right in the middle of the “Summer Under the Covers,” it was before the band had played Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It, Killing in the Name, or anything by Jay-Z. No one was expecting Sabotage, and, from what I heard from friends who were there, the audience absolutely freaked out. Tears everywhere; hugs all around; and, once it kicked in, some of the most vigorous dancing ever seen at a Phish show. The band played the song again a week later at Lemonwheel, and here’s video:

The other Phishy Beastie Boys cover with which we’ve been blessed was not quite as much of a blessing musically speaking, but it sure was entertaining. Watch Trey and Jennifer Hartswick kick it Root Down:

Now for the all-Phish section of the broadcast. Some great videos, fresh on Youtube:
