OPT March Madness 2013 Round Two

Image by the wonderful Barefoot Bob, rest in peace.

We have arrived at the second round of our ‘March Madness: Road to the JAMPIONSHIP (3.0 Edition)‘ tournament. OPT staff partnered up with Pete from PhanArt a month ago to start working tediously on the seedings of our favorite jams between the Hampton return and the Golf Cart Marathon at Madison Square Garden, each year including 16.

After the first 32 matchups, we didn’t encounter any HUGE upsets but we did encounter a couple disappointments (personally). I have to admit that I really wanted the 8/31/12 Chalk Dust Torture and Runaway Jim to make it to the next round. We found both of those jams to be incredible. Needless to say, the phans have spoken and we move into the next series of polls.

I was excited to see how the (8) 12/4/09 YEM vs (9) 12/3/09 Down with Disease would turn out. I see both of them as stellar Phish jams. The Down with Disease features guitar akin to Trey’s late-90′s playing along with some explosive full-band tension/release jamming and incredibe spaciness. The YEM features some fantastic patterning, a serious bass & drums, and a great peak–something lacking from nearly every 3.0 YEM. The YEM edged out the experimental Down with Disease by just 9 votes.

An upset I was hoping to see was the 8/11/09 Number Line beating the 12/30/09 BOTT. I found the first-ever experimental Number Line far more impressive than the extended BOTT. I really think  the latter lacks excitement after the seven-minute mark or so (I know, I ‘suck at Phish’). Another example of how I ‘suck at Phish’ would be the fact that I was hoping for the 11/28/09 Seven Below > Ghost to lose to the jam preceding the 2009 Icculus: 8/14/09′s Ghost -> Psycho Killer -> Catapult.

One surprising upset is the Bethel Woods Halley’s Comet going down to 6/17/11 Rock and Roll > Ghost. While the latter is impressive, we thought the extended and unique take on Halley’s (a song that people had been begging to break out of its comfort zone) would for sure be a phan-favorite. Another upset, but not as surprising, is the 9/4/11 Ghost -> Guy Forget beating out UIC’s monster Down with Disease. The Down with Disease was seeded higher because of its impressive improvisation. The jam in the Ghost was certainly exciting but the entire jam was structured knowing they would be entering the extremely rare Guy Forget. I think the rareness of Guy Forget being played might have stuck in people’s minds more than the jam out of yet another second-set-opening Down with Disease. I don’t agree with the outcome–but I understand it.

I’m also surprised that the Bethel Waves (no, not the soundcheck) beat the Bethel Bathtub Gin…I bet if the poll read “Bathtub Gin -> Manteca -> Bathtub Gin”, the Gin would have won. It shows how important it is to actually know the jam before picking one (which I know most of you don’t do but certainly some of our readers do). “OMG Rory, you don’t know what I like!”–whatever.

Moving on:

For this next round of voting, we actually have two match-ups where jams from the same show are going up against each other–it’s like two brothers fighting…kinda. The 6/7/09 Tweezer will be battling its set brother, Sand. This sand signified the first experimental, type-II jam of 3.0. Clocking in at about 20-minutes, people were hosed down with their first dose of psychedelic Phish since their return. While the Tweezer is a bit less experimental, the type-I rocker brings the crowd to a collective high before walking off stage in a unique second set Tweezer closer. The other set brothers will be the 6/25/10 Chalk Dust Torture and 2001. The Chalk Dust is the first experimental version of 3.0 (correct me if I’m wrong) and puts the 2010 style of jamming on full display. The 2001 is about half the length but features the Billy Jean and Thriller teases for an all-out dance-party segment (a year from Michael Jackson’s death) before returning to 2001. (watch below)
